Tamilnadu Minister for Electricity Arcot N Veerasamy has stressed on the need for awareness on diabetes.
Inaugurating Kallam Anji Reddy Centre of Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) here recently, he said in India, the diabetes apart from affecting the rich, also affected the poor.
The Minister requested the MDRF and other such medical foundations to raise awareness among people about the disease and change their food patterns.
He also asked the media to provide adequate coverage on diabetes and suggested on new methods of treatment, including Ayurveda, Siddha and Yoga.
The Kallam Anji Reddy Centre, named after Dr K Anji Reddy, chairman of Dr Reddy’s laboratories is located in the Women’s Biotechnology Park at Siruseri.
Anji Reddy in his speech informed that they are preparing a drug that reduces the enzyme caused through exercise. This would control obesity and diabetes, he said.
V Mohan, president and chief of diabetes research, MDRF said that the new facility will be involved in novel research studies on epidemiology and genetics of diabetes and its complications. Also, new products for persons with diabetes, including formulation and evaluation of various diabetic foods would be developed, he said.
In his address, agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan stressed on the importance of giving nutritional support to pre-natal mothers to prevent malnutrition, thereby reducing diabetes in children.
He suggested that panchayat raj institutions should be utilised to spread health literacy in rural communities.
