Problems of parking abound on this road

Chennai, Sept 24:

ACTION? Vehicles parked illegally in front of C1
Police station  on NSC Bose Road at Broadway.

The rise in vehicular population and increasing commercialisation on the NSC Bose road at Broadway has led to inconvenient and illegal parking. Hundreds of motor vehicles are parked illegally in front of the malls or on any vacant land on either side of the road, creating problems to the shoppers.

People find it difficult to step into the shops in the evenings, as the vehicles intrude into their walking space. A cross-section of the residents says that it is the shopkeepers who are to blame as they allow any manner of vehicles to crowd around in a careless array.

However a shopkeeper on the NSC Bose Road said, ‘it is not possible for us to fight with the customers every time asking them to follow rules. Moreover we will only end up losing business.’

The situation is so bad that vehicles are parked even in front of the C1 police station, disrupting free flow of traffic.

Though proper parking space has been provided near the police station, it does not have the capacity to accommodate the heavy inflow of vehicles during the evenings. Since this is a business district, a number of slow-moving vehicles ply through this road, further aggravating the traffic problems.

Despite bringing in stipulated timings for the entry of slow- moving vehicles, none follow them. ‘During the banned hours in the morning, the cyclerickshaws and tricycles come into the way of motorised vehicles creating jams,’ said a resident here.

A traffic police, who was on duty at the junction near the C1 Police Station, said that offenders of parking laws are penalised. When questioned about the four- wheelers parked in ‘no parking’ space in front of the police station, he expressed his helplessness, while pointing out that they might belong to the higher- level police officers.
