Govt to fix B Ed fee at private colleges

        The government would fix a fee for B.Ed courses offered by self financing colleges (SFC) in the State from next year, K Ganesan, secretary, Higher Education Department said today.

        Inaugurating the single window counselling for admission of B Ed courses in the Government Aided and SFC at Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study in Education here, Ganesan said the government had not fixed the fee for the private colleges as a case was pending before the Court.

        The State is contemplating to setup a committee to fix fees for the colleges, after completing the court case, he added.

        On counselling he said, for the first time admission to B Ed courses have been done through the Single Window system to fill 3479 seats in government aided colleges (2208 seats) and SFC (1271 seats). He said of the 29 SFC, most of the colleges surrendered 100 per cent seats for counselling and others surrendered 50 per cent seats. The counselling will be on till 5 October.

        Ganesan, told reporters that at present SFC collects fees ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000, whereas at government colleges the fees are fixed at Rs 1720.

        The department would investigate, if it received any complaints of exorbitant fees being collected by private colleges, he said. On the raids conducted at the Self Financing Engineering Colleges in the State, he said the department will write to AICTE to take action against the erring colleges.

        Nalini Ravindran, Director, Department of College Education was also present.
