AEPC resents media report

Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has criticised the recent expose by UK-based newspaper alleging poor working conditions in the garment sector. Vijay Agarwal, chairman of AEPC said, ‘the report is aimed at tarnishing the image of India and its exporters. Allegations were that the workers were underpaid and forced to work overtime and were abused. ‘There is no legal or industry-agreed definition for a living wage—it varies from place to place. Indian garment exporters including Gokaldas and Texport abide by the labour laws of the land.

The Indian labour laws clearly set out the minimum wages and work hours which are followed by all the manufacturing units across all industries. The AEPC feels that the government should counter this kind of false propaganda as the Indian Textile and Apparel sector is critically important to the India economy contributing more than 80 per cent the net export earnings of the country.
