Free shorthand course for govt staff

        The Stenographers' Guild at T.Nagar will be training as many as 143 government employees in Tamil shorthand free of cost.

        This was announced at the 143rd birth anniversary celebrations of Tamil shorthand inventor Rao Saheb M Srinivasa Rao here recently.

        Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Social Welfare Poongothai Aladi Aruna said, 'Before the invention of the computer, shorthand and typewriting institutions were one of the tools that helped in women's empowerment.'

        Many women who learned shorthand were now well-placed, she said.

        'With the changing scenario, there is nothing wrong in learning other languages, but at the same time, youngsters should not forget Tamil,' the minister added.

        Expressing concern over the decreasing number of people learning Tamil shorthand, honorary president S V Ramasamy requested the government to provide stipend to the learners.

        'As an initiative to promote the growth of Tamil shorthand, the stenographers' guild would train as many as 143 government employees,who should interest in learning this,' he said.

        Later the Minister unveiled the portrait of Rao Saheb M Srinivasa Rao and distributed prizes to the winners of shorthand competitions.
