Varsity to start 15 community colleges

        The Madras University in association with the American Association of Community Colleges will start community colleges to benefit the marginalised sections of society particularly the economically challenged women and youth.

        Speaking to reporters here yesterday, Madras University Vice Chancellor S Ramachandran said the university will have 15 community colleges in Chennai for which no formal education was needed for getting enrolled.

        'Initially we will start such programmes at the existing colleges on trial basis and later expand it to all colleges', he said, adding that the students especially from rural areas would be imparted vocational training to make them employable.

        A delegation team comprising 18 presidents of various community colleges from US have come to demonstrate about the community college system and they will share information with the faculty members of the university during the two-day workshop which begins from Saturday, Ramachandran said.

        He also said that the Central government and UGC were keen in supporting such initiatives.

        American Association of Community Colleges, CEO, George Boggs, Hillsborough Community College, president, Gwendolyn Stephenson, Community College International Development, India consultant, Robert Keener and various representatives were present.
