        A construction worker from Maharashtra got drowned in a pond into which he slipped near Sholinganallur, a city suburb, yesterday.

        According to police, Sanjay Kumar, 22, was working as a daily wage earner in a multi-storeyed construction site at Sholinganallur. When he went down to a pond for a bath, he slipped into it accidentally.

        As he did not know swimming, he got drowned in the pond. Thoraipakkam police have registered a case and enquiring into it.

        A young woman committed suicide following alleged harassment for dowry. And her father has accused her husband and father-in-law of driving her to death.

        The woman (18), residing at Valasarawakkam, had fallen in love and married her neighbour with their parents' consent last January.

        Muralikrishnan, the father of the girl, had given seven sovereigns as dowry against the promised 10 sovereigns. This led to a quarrel and the woman hanged herself. Based on a complaint from her father, police have detained her husband, her father-in-law and the latter's brother. Further investigations are on.
