AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA   VOICE MAIL

A farce it was

        Sir,

In the recently held by-elections to 67 wards of the Chennai Corporation, the voting was very feeble. It was less than 30 per cent. While the DMK, Congress and their allies contested the polls, the AIADMK- MDMK combine boycotted the elections. The other parties that contested the poll were BJP and DMDK. Thus the votes polled by the Congress, DMK, PMK, Dalith Panthers, Communists etc all put together polled only less than 30 per cent of the votes.

A candidate securing mere 4,000 votes got elected to the Corporation Council. In some wards, like Mandaveli, the person who secured just 200 votes got elected. The voter strength here is nearly one lakh and a person with mere 200 votes is now the representative for the whole one lakh people. This is a ridiculous condition. The election law should be amended in such a way that a winning candidate should secure at least 20 per cent of the votes.

Further the elections have proved that the Congress, DMK and allies can get only a paltry fraction of the votes while the AIADMK-MDMK combine could command over 70 per cent of the votes. The election to Chennai Corporation is a sample to assess the popularity of the parties. Therefore the Tamilnadu Assembly should be dissolved at once and fresh elections held in a congenial environment, where everyone participates, to get a fresh mandate. The election also proved that the DMK and its allies have no public support.

        Dr R K Balasubramanian, Mylapore.
