Reaching out to tsunami victims

NT Bureau
Chennai, Dec 24:

Two years after tsunami struck the coastal hamlets of Tamilnadu, Mata Amritananda Mayi Math, an NGO, has been at the forefront in restoring normalcy in the affected regions along the coast.

Math has built and given away over 4,000 houses to the villagers of Tamilnadu and Kerala. Also, houses are nearing completion in Andaman - Nicobar islands and Sri Lanka. In Tamilnadu, nearly 1000 houses were handed over till date.

This week nearly 500 houses have been given away in Tamilnadu and Puducherry, constituting more than 30 per cent of the dwelling units handed over to the beneficiaries of the State.

Amritananda Mayi Math would hand over another 500 houses by the end of January 2007. Thus, the Math would have completed 2,000 houses in the coastal belt of Tamilnadu alone and thereby becoming the single largest agency involved in the rehabilitation of tsunami victims.
