AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Some rationalism this, Mr. CM!

NT Bureau
Chennai, Dec 24:

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has said he would deliver 'the combined rule of Periyar and Anna,' while participating in the Periyar film audio release function in the city yesterday. One may wonder when did Periyar and Anna ruled together. While the former never held any official positions and hated power, the latter ruled only for a very short while. He also never became the president of the party (DMK) saying the 'chief position' was always reserved for Periyar. However, after the passing away of Anna, party rules were changed and the Chief Minister is also the party chief now.

Only the Chief Minister may know what he meant by saying that he would be giving a rule of both 'Anna and Periyar.' Ironically, Karunanidhi had also said that he follows a 'simple and to the point' style following the 'advice of EVR' that communication should be simple and straight sans 'decorative, empty words', which was the style of Anna's. By revealing the true view of Periyar about Anna's works, Karunanidhi has let both the leaders down.

         COMMENT

Karunanidhi had also expressed his wish that the film should have a successful run and silence the 'vultures' that are out to 'vandalise' the ideals of Periyar. What the devout 'rationalist' follower of Periyar has failed to understand is that in a democracy, a counter viewpoint does not amount to 'vandalisation.' It only says one's beliefs cannot be thrust upon others by force. Acceptance should come voluntarily.

The Chief Minister has also with a sense of pride said that this an age where penace (Thavam) is scorned and ridiculed, in complete contrast to olden times when it was revered.

It may be recalled that no one in this State questioned the 'rationale' behind the 'obeisance' that the Chief Minister paid when he visited his mother's memorial soon after winning the assembly elections. It would not only be poking one's nose in somebody else's 'personal' beliefs, it would also be 'uncivili-sed' to do that.

Karunanidhi would do a service to this nation if he could answer whether it was a civilised act to ridicule what others believe in.

The world may also be perplexed by the unique brand of rationalism of the Chief Minister when he said the destiny had 'spared him and the DK President Ki. Veeramani to perpetuate the legacy of Periyar'.

Only our Lord in the heaven knows from when on believing destiny and nature became an integral part of Periyar's rationalism. The height of DMK brand of rationalism was the invitation to cadres in today's Murasoli (DMK's official paper) to garland the statue of EVR on account of the late leader's death anniversary.
