Chennai Dec 24:

Power electronics and related systems play a crucial role in Indian Railways by providing cutting-edge technology in electronic traction.

This observation was made by R M Vasagam, former director, Directorate of Advanced Technology and Planning, ISRO, in the course of his inaugural address an conference on Power Electronics 2006 organised by Numeric Power Systems Ltd here recently.

Vasagam called for efforts towards indigenous production of various tools and components that were being used in power electrnics and systems. Engineering institutes in India imparting courses on power electronics should focus on modern designs and testing facilities, he said.

He recalled the erstwhile Soviet Union owed its great leap in engineering technology to its concerted focus on power electronics. Rural electrificiation should be modernised to benefit the farm populace, he said. Students should aspire for a career in the Power Systems, rather than choosing the IT field, if India wanted to make it big in this electronic sector.
