World Meteorological Day brings focus on global warming

Time is ticking by, so brace up

Chennai, Mar 23:

With today being World Meteorological Day, the much talked about subject that assumes more significance now than ever before is global warming.

One cannot dismiss the repercussions arising out of such a phenomenon and rightly, theme for this year is 'Polar Meteorology: Understanding Global Impact' .

Hence, it is high time to avoid polluting the surroundings to save the earth. Vehicular emissions should be reduced. Non-conventional fuels (biogas fuels) should be encouraged. With the use of fluorescent bulbs 1,300 pound carbon-di-oxide emission into the atmosphere could be minimised per bulb.

According to Secretary-General of World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) M Jarraud, 'Every year, 23 March is observed as World Meteorological Day. World Meteorological Organisation's 187 members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day. This Day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the organisation. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialised agency of the United Nations System.

'In 2005, on the occasion of its 57th session, the WMO Executive Council decided that the theme for the year 2007 would be 'Polar Meteorology: Understanding Global Impact', in recognition of the importance of, and as a contribution to International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008, which is being co-sponsored by WMO and the International Council for Science (ICSU). To ensure that researchers can work in both polar regions during the summer and winter months, the event will actually be held from March 2007 to March 2009. The fundamental concept of the IPY is an intensive burst of internationally coordinated, interdisciplinary scientific research and observations focused on the Earth's polar regions and their far-reaching global effects.'

The weather condition prevailing in the polar regions could change the climatic situation of the other places on this globe. Realising this, the weathermen in order to concentrate of the polar areas, the first polar year 1882-83 and the second one 1932-33 had been announced. During those periods there were no infrastructure to study the weather condition in the North and the South poles. And later satellites and automatic weather research stations were developed. As a result we could extract more details now

In line with this year's theme, we cannot let go off the climatic conditions in Antarctica, an ice continent of the South Pole which is covered with glaciers, hills and frozen lakes. And here is where pure air and pure water are present. And the major portion is ice. In the summer the outer ice melts and water reservoirs are filled. Snow fall is an all-season phenomenon and in the interior it is lesser in intensity. Even though snow, cyclone sweep the entire pole and raining sparsely the temperature will be at the water-freezing level. Scientists and tourists visit Antarctica in summer. Only 2 per cent area is free from the clutches of ice. In winter the temperature goes down to minus 70 to 85 degree Celsius.

Quite contrarily the North Pole is in the ocean. Hence the Eskimos settled here switch places according to the season. The topography is exposed to seasonal changes, which area is quarter the size of south. Snow fall is comparatively less. Both the poles have six months night and six months day.

These determine climatic condition of the earth. The changes to occur is the present indications on the poles. Unmindful to the pollution that is man-made if not amended it will be as if we are digging our own grave, natural scientists warn.

It may be noted here that WMO's international council submitted the third research papers in 2001. It said that the average temperature of earth has risen by 0.6 degree celsius. If this continues the temperature rise from 1990 to 2100 would be somewhere between 1.4 and 5.8 degree Celsius. And by the time the sea level will rise by 9 cm to 88 cm resulting in the islands part and parcel of the developing nations and other coastal areas may have to face problems. So the world has to wake up and see to it that the impact of global warmings does not affect our planet, Mother Earth.
