        An elderly woman died and 25 persons were hospitalised after a rabid dog bit them near Gingee even as reports are appearing in the press highlighting the stray dog menace in many parts of the country.

        Pachaiammal (59), the woman was sleeping in front of her shop on 1 March when a stray dog bit her. She underwent treatment at government Villupuram Hospital and was discharged. Yesterday, she fell ill seriously and died.

        It is said the same dog on 4 March bit a couple of persons. Mujir (18), Saidha (40), Raghu (45), Boss (70), Prem and Baby who were admitted to Villupuram and Puducherry hospitals.

        On 21 March, a dog on Kattabomman Street in Ginjee began biting people and 25 of them were sent to hospital. Some members of the public chased the dog and killed it.
