Chennai, Mar 23:
The State government should relax FSI (Floor Space Index) rules subscribing to the concept of vertical city as that would not only protect farm lands being acquired but also ease traffic congestion, founder of Exnora International M B Nirmal has said.
He said this here yesterday while launching 'Save Farm Lands Campaign' to protect farm lands which were being converted into satellite towns, residential colonies and industrial estates both by the government and private players.
Speaking to reporters, Nirmal said he had submitted the list of recommendations to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
He further said permission should be given to builders to construct more floors since the supply of land space was limited and finite.
'Next, only non-farm lands should have to be used for civil construction', he said, adding that an enquiry commission had to be appointed to monitor the issuance of 'No Objection Certificate' for conversion of wet land as dry land.
The other recommendations included updating government records and store information on farm lands, declaring farm lands as protected land like forest lands, creating a land pool for facilitating farmers to sell their lands, auditing the number, size and causes for conversion of wet land as dry land in the last 10 years and deepen the lakes.
He also said that encouraging
vertical cities as against the present horizontally expanding cities would
help recharge groundwater and water bodies with the help of water supply
systems through well- laid pipes.
