PMK sits in dharna in front of CM's office

NT Bureau
Chennai, Mar 23:

Anxiety and tension gripped Fort St. George today as PMK MLAs squatted all of a sudden in front of the Chief Minister's office. The reason for their impromptu dharna was the Chief Minister's reluctance to grant audience to them to voice their displeasure over personalised attacks on the PMK supremo.

As soon as the budget was presented in the House today, GK Mani, floor leader of PMK led his party legislators to the chamber of the Chief Minister but was told that Karunanidhi was busy with his work.

This infuriated the MLAs and they swiftly sat on the floor just in front of the Chief Minister's room demanding immediate audience with Karunanidhi.

Sensing trouble, Additional DGP Nanjil Kumaran rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the PMK members. However, it is said that they told the senior police official that they would not move an inch unless they were given an opportunity to be heard by the Chief Minister.

Luckily, for the PMK men their stubbornness yielded fruits as they were soon allowed into the Chief Minister's cabin. Speaking to reporters after meeting the Chief Minster, Mani said they were shocked by the recent interview of DMK orator Vettrikondan to a Tamil weekly.

'It was an uncivilised and crude personal attack on our party's founder leader Dr Ramadoss,' GK Mani said and added that they told Karunanidhi of their apprehension that the outburst of the DMK orator had the approval of the DMK highcommand.

'We have never spoken of DMK or its leadership in abusive language,' the PMK leader said and wanted to know whether it was fair to describe Dr Ramadoss in a derogatory manner. The legislators of PMK belonging to Salem district only aired their grievances and never spoke a word against the Chief Minister or his party.

'Karuananidhi has promised action and has also assured that he would make Vettrikondan apologise for his act,' Mani told reporters and added that Karunanidhi also expressed anguish over the remarks of his party colleague. 'This only shows the generosity of the Chief Minister,' Mani said and hinted that the party would treat the matter as closed with the intervention of the Chief Minister.
