NT Bureau
Chennai, July 23:

Local Administration Minister M K Stalin and Corporation Mayor M Subramanian
at a function organised to issue appointment orders to crematorium assistants in
Chennai. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni is also seen.

Local Administration Minister M K Stalin yesterday said the status of making grave-diggers crematorium assistants in Chennai Corporation would be extended to other Corporations, municipalities and at all village panchayat- levels in the State shortly.

Distributing the appointment order to crematorium assistants and cellphones to certain Corporation officials and council members here, the Minister said the DMK government had been fulfilling the promises and announcements made in the election manifesto promptly.

Impressed by crematorium assistants who had turned up in their uniforms and gloves, Stalin said this attitude should be adopted while performing their duty and added that they should come forward freely to represent their problems to the officials concerned to get them redressed.

Urging the Corporation Council members not to 'switch off' their cell phones, the Local Administration Minister said they should receive calls and act accordingly for the good of the public.

Taking a dig at some media reports on State government's stepmotherly treatment to T Nagar Constituency since it has an AIADMK MLA, Stalin listed out various developmental works being carried out in the constituency.

He further said the demand to have an MLA office for T Nagar constituency was under process.

Speaking on the occasion, Corporation Mayor M Subramanian said the societal stigma to discrimination of grave-diggers had now been reformed and their economic status would be improved as they would get a sum of around Rs 5,000 as remuneration.

He also urged them to be corrupt and complaint-free employees of the local body. Later, Stalin issued appointment orders to 173 crematorium assistants from 38 graveyards in Chennai and 677 cellphones to the Corporation Council members and certain officials.

Deputy Mayor Sathyabama, Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, Joint Commissioner (education) Kakarla Usha and council members also spoke on the occasion.
