Wide variety of handicraft on show

        An exhibition in Chennai has displayed a broad variety of handmade articles at Vijaya Mahal.

        A string of multi coloured beads from Narikuravas, hand woven double colour bangles from Rajasthan and perfectly designed wool wall hangings from Pudhucherry are among them.

        Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd has set up the exhibition. Inaugurating the display, secretary to handlooms and handicrafts textile khadi department , Viswanath Shegaonkar, said, 'this exhibition has brought together 56 participants from all over the country. The exhibition provides additional marketing assistance to the artisans and it conducts exhibition all over the country throughout the year.

        Handcrafted handlooms and artistic jewelleries from various states are showcased, among them the eight brass Lakshmi branching lamp, seven and half rosewood jula, dining table, tanjore painting and newly designed sea shells handicrafts are some of the special attraction of this exhibition.

        Shegaonkar also said the Poompuhar showroom has proposed to conduct 20 exhibitions in the year as against 15 exhibitions conducted last year.

        The chairman and managing director of Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation, KA Mathew, said, ' craft bazaar core initiative is to boost artisans and give them marketing opportunity to their rare hand made crafts,which are slowly deteriorating without enough focus and attention'.

        Apart from this, the bazaar has bronze icons, clay, terra cotta, stone, paper mache idols, teak wood pooja mandapams, Lucknow chikan sarees, chudidhars from Rajsathan and flooring carpets are also exhibited. The exhibition is on till 1 August.
