Police Commissioner Letika Saran today issued strict warning to erring auto drivers who were demanding flat rates from the public, even as many complaints were being lodged on the tampered meters fitted into the three-wheelers.
Some of the auto drivers were demanding excess fares even for short distances and many of them have still not installed electronic meters. 'We have mounted a crack down on such erring autorickshaws in the city,' Letika Saran said while addressing the media persons today.
Handing over the stolen properties and valuables worth Rs 37 lakh and gold jewellery weighing 300 sovereign to the rightful owners, she said due to sustained raids on rowdy elements and illegal dens in the city the police were able to recoverable the stolen properties.
Among the seized articles were six computers, three cars, two autorickshaws, 15 motor cycles and 29 cell phones. On the spurt of chain snatching in the city, she said night patrolling has been intensified in areas where frequent complaints had been received in the last few months.
To regulate the traffic on highways on which flyovers were being constructed, especially at Koyambedu, Padi junction and Maduravoyal - Koyambedu Road, the city police would bring in a restriction for heavy vehicles. Traffic Police as decided to implement the restriction norms in the movement of heavy vehicles and containers, except those vehicles carrying essential goods, on arterial roads from 8 am to 9 pm from 4 August.
The movement of big containers
would be prohibited on both direction at NH 4 from the junction of Chennai
bypass (Maduravoyil junction to Koyambedu junction ). Heavy vehicles on
Chennai bypass from Tambaram and intending to proceed towards North Chennai
via NH4 and Koyambedu junction would have to take the detour via the Ponamallee-Avadi
Road and Ambattur Madhanakuppam - Mettupalayam road to reach Puzhal junction.
