Chennai, July 23:

        Various welfare measures and schemes to be implemented by the State government were discussed at the Cabinet meeting held here this morning.
      The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. It was attended by Ministers and senior officials of various departments.

        Various issues regarding Public Works Department, HR & CE Department, Tamil Language Development Department were discussed at the meeting. The deliberations also reviewed the schemes implemented by the government since it assumed office a year ago.

        The meeting lasted for over couple of hours in which several other issues were deliberated.

        The entry of Multi National Companies (MNCs) into the retail market in the State, the government's decision to enter cable TV business and the proper conduct of the co-operative elections were also discussed.

        It may be recalled that the co-operative polls were cancelled after reports of violence in several places between the partners of DMK - led alliance.

        Earlier, a resolution was passed at the meeting congratulating Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for ensuring the success of Prathiba Patel in the recently-concluded Presidential elections.

        Prathiba Patil was elected as President after she defeated her rival Shekawat by a margin of over three lakh votes.

        The resolution noted that Karunanidhi was the key in ensuring that a woman candidate is elected for the country's top post.

        He had been to New Delhi and held discussions with leaders of the UPA including AICC president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and leaders of the Left parties to facilitate the election of Parthiba Patil.

        The resolution also heaped laurels on the Chief Minister for holding a mega women's rally in Chennai to seek support for Prathiba Patil.

        All his efforts have ended in a huge victory for her, it noted.
