        Central Revenue Intelligence officials on Sunday seized 1,000 star tortoises at Chennai airport that were about to be smuggled to Malaysia.

        According to the CRI, star tortoises are smuggled from Chennai to south-east Asian nations such as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand often.

        After a tip off, intelligence officials set up a vigil for the consingment.

        They intercepted a suspicious-looking person when he tried to board a flight bound for Malaysia at 11.30 pm.

        One thousand star tortoises were found in his suitcase during a search.

        The man was arrested and the tortoises were turned over to forest department officials on Monday.

        Rigorous measures are already in place to prevent the smuggling of star tortoises.
