G RAMANARAYANAN
| For the past 15 days
or so, streets in suburban Madipakkam have not been cleared of garbage.
As a result, the entire area stinks.
What has led to this situation? Alandur Municipality has been lending a helping hand and the garbage was dumped at Kaiveli, Pallikaranai. But this was not for very long as local residents at Pallikaranai protested against the move to use their area as a dumping ground. This made residents welfare association collect the rubbish by itself and hand it over to the panchayat which disposed of the same. Later, the associations stopped doing the job at the behest of the panchayat and the panchayat undertook the job. Now, the Alandur Municipality left the panchayat to care of itself as the opposition of the disposal at Kaiveli grew stronger. With no place to dispose of the litter, the panchayat is helpless. |

When the Alandur Municipality was contacted by the hapless residents, it was said that they could approach the panchayat for redressal.
As the garbage got accumulated
for the past two weeks there remains 45 lorry loads of rubbish lying on
each and every street. Residents are fuming. When asked about a solution,
the panchayat officials said they badly needed a compost yard. Are the
authorities listening? Hope they do.
