TN Governor to open English lab

Chennai, Sept 22:

        Governor Surjit Singh Barnala will inaugurate a Computerized English Lab at the Stenographer's Guild, T Nagar on 27 September.

        According to a press release, the new lab facility will offer listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the English language through the use of computers. This would help more than 20 students to undergo training simultaneously, in a modern and sophisticated atmosphere.

        The Guild also proposes to introduce 'Online teaching of spoken English skills' through its website www.stenold.org within a month.

        Madras University Vice-Chancellor S Ramachandran will also participate.


How good is your heart?

        A two-day heart check-up camp will be conducted by Mehta's Hospitals in connection with the World Heart Day.

        According to a press release, those attending camp would undergo following tests such as ECG, fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, TGL, VLDL, serum creatinine, cardiac consultation by cardiologist and diet counseling.

Computer training for youngsters

College launches Hindi association

        The importance of learning Hindi language was highlighted at the inauguration of an association of Hindi in Guru Nanak College, Velachery, here recently.

        Professor of Hindi, MOP Vaishnav College for Women, Vidhya Sharma, speaking on the occasion, stressed the need for learning Hindi language while also giving importance to the mother tongue.

        An orientation course on Hindi for non-Hindi students was also launched to commemorate 'Hindi Day'. The 15-day course had been designed to be part of academics and students would be given certificate on the completion of the course.

        The orientation course covers basic grammar in Hindi and also trains students on spoken Hindi, a press release said.


Free spoken English class for students living in slums

        Former Director General of Police S Kumaraswamy has inaugurated a free spoken English class for students belonging to the gypsy and vettiyan (undertakers) communities and for those living in slums in Chennai.

        According to a press release, the Stenographer's Guild, T Nagar, launched the program which was sponsored by Sri Krishna Sweets to commemorate the 83 birth anniversary of its founder N K Mahadeva Iyer. The course would be for a duration of one month and on successful completion, the students would be trained in computers.

        The release quoted S V Ramaswamy, president of the Guild, as saying that it had identified nearly 100 students belonging to the above groups to undergo this course.

        M Murali, managing director, Sri Krishna Sweets, also participated in the inaugural function.


Education camp for boys
