Concept of time,memory defined

Paintings of Rameshwar Singh who hails from Rajasthan are on display at Vinyasa Premier Art Gallery, Chennai. His paintings comprise various themes from Indian mythology, culture and history that are painted on canvas and silk paper with acrylic colours. In collating culture, Rameshwar has evoked the concept of time and memory.

He has created canvases that reflect the concept of time and space, routed through memories and roots to create his individual identity by interposing with tradition which harbours images that serve an encyclopaedic function with a capacity to retrieve images and other cultural forms. Rameshwar has interacted meaningfully with culture as a living identity. He was born at Deogarh in Rajasthan and is currently based in Jaipur.

He works with a particular sensibility that is rooted in tradition-classical and folk, interpreted according to his contemporary reality. In his art, he reinvents traditions by juxtaposing contemporary art with popular culture and folk art. Traditionally, folk art comes from the fundamentals of life and invocations towards nature, spirit and its regenerative functions.

Singh's environment was woven with this richness of tradition that has lived by his family through sartorial attire, as well as ritualistic practices that provided opportunities for drawing, painting and crafting objects offered during festivals and other occasions such as marriages, birth and death. It was the domestic site that became his playground for not only learning various artistic skills that were honed later by academic pedagogy at Udaipur University but also gave him an awareness of timeless traditions that continue with the same vigour and vitality.

The display was on from 11 September and would go on till 20 September.
