        Local Administration Minister M K Stalin today tabled a Bill in the Assembly facilitating both Chennai Mayor and Deputy Mayor to contest again for the same posts.

        Introducing the Bill, Stalin said Section 30 of Madras Municipal Corporation Act is being amended making the Mayor and Deputy Mayor eligible to contest the council elections for the same posts again. And Section 53 of the Act would also be amended for convening the Chennai Corporation council meeting every month in lieu of the present once in three months.

        The Minister while tabling the Bill detailed about the reasons for the amendment and the objectives of it. With a view to streamline Madras Municipal Corporation rules, he said the government is to bring an amendment to the Madras Municipal Corporation Act 1919.

        It may be noted that the previous AIADMK government had made amended the Madras Municipal Corporation Act preventing Stalin from contesting the election again when he was the Mayor.
