AIADMK today staged a walk-out over Chennai civic poll issue in the Assembly.

Deputy Leader of Opposition O Panneerselvam made a vain attempt to raise the civic poll issue in the Assembly during Zero Hour. However. the Speaker

R Avudaiyappan denied permission stating that the case was still pending in the court.

The House witnessed noisy scenes as AIADMK members were on their feet raising slogans urging the Speaker to allow O Panneerselvam to raise the issue.

Pointing out to the Assembly rules, Avudaiyappan said that the issue could not be discussed in the House since it was sub judice.

'Whatever stated by you (Panneerselvam) would not be entered in the Assembly record', he said.

Intervening, State Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy said that even before the third judge delivering the judgement on the split verdict given by the two-member Bench on the civic poll issue, the Chief Minister

M Karunanidhi has asked the 99 Councillors to resign and face the election again.

By this, the Chief Minister has set an example to other States to emulate this. 'If you still want to debate then we could also recall the violent incidents of 2001 Chennai Corporation polls,' he said.

Leader of the House K Anbazhagan said that the verdict of the Bench was not binding on anybody as it was a split verdict. One of the judges had given a verdict that the issue itself would not come under the purview of the court. 'This being the case, the Chief Minister on his own has urged the Councillors to resign. Not because the verdict is binding on him', he said.

AIADMK ally MDMK also staged a walkout on the same issue.
