The open ground on the 7th Street, Lakshmi Nagar in suburban was meant to be a children's playground but it has not served its purpose as anti-social elements from other areas indulge in nocturnal activities, say residents in the locality.

Labour Minister T M Anbarasan had sanctioned Rs 5 lakh and enhanced it to Rs 6 lakh for construction of compound walls around it. The work should have commenced last May, but no work was started till date, said a Councillor to this reporter. It is said the work came to a standstill for reasons unknown.

In the recent past, some people have erected huts opposite to and at the side of the ground and have spoilt the environment. It may be recalled that the playground in question was donated by Lakshmi Nagar Civic Welfare Association to the Alandur Municipality for maintenance and development. But no work was started. As of now residents at Lakshmi Nagar want the playground put to use. And they have urged Alandur Municipality to act and make the ground free from the clutches of rowdies.
