Lanka frees 10 fishermen

Chennai, Sept 21:

        Ten Indian fishermen who were apprehended by the Sri Lanka Navy on 11 September, were released by The Magistrate's Court of Mannar, Sri Lanka, yesterday. The court has also released the two fishing vessels.

        According to an official press release from the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai, the fishermen were produced before the Magistrate immediately after their arrest and were detained till 20 September.

        The Sri Lankan High Commission here received numerous requests from various local authorities, fishermen associations and their members requesting the release of fishermen folk on humanitarian basis.

        Based on the representations and requests, the Sri Lanka government ordered for the release of fishermen. As per practice, their repatriation will be done by the Indian High Commission in Colombo in consultation with the Sri Lankan authorities, the release said.
