NABARD sanctions Rs 544 crore for TN

        National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs 544.03 crore for Tamilnadu to implement various projects.

        According to a press release, the projects include up gradation of 1,491 village roads in 29 districts and 23 flood protection projects in Cauvery Coleroon banks in Karur, Tiruchi and Perambalur districts.

        The release said that the road projects on completion would result in better market accessibility and would save time. Also the flood protection works on implementation would help in protecting the properties from the flood damages and avoid loss of lives.

Senior citizens thank PM, CM

        The Tamilnadu Senior Citizen and Pensioners Welfare Association has thanked Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for fulfilling the demand of sanctioning old age pension to all living senior citizens below the poverty line with effect from 19 November this year.

        In a press release, the association also thanked Chief Minister of Tamilnadu M Karunanidhi for announcing a six per cent hike in dearness allowance for State government pensioners along with others with effect from 1 July, 2007.

BSNL ties up with BPCL

        BSNL Chennai Telephones has entered into a tie-up with Bharat Petroleum Ltd for the sale of recharge coupons, top-up cards, India Telephone Cards and Sancharnet Cards through its Bharatgas distributors.

        This facility was inaugurated by CGM of Chennai Telephones in the presence of the regional manager (LPG) BPCL on Tuesday.

        According to a press release, 28 Bharatgas distributors in and around Chennai would now be selling BSNL products to about 4.2 lakh households at their doorstep.

Swayamvaram 30 September

Inter-college literary fest

        'Zealitt 2007,' an inter-collegiate English literary festival was organised by the Department of English of Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women here recently.

        David T Hopper, US Consul General, Chennai, who presided over the inauguration, spoke about the importance of English and highlighted the need to be proficient in the language to attain global success.

        Various events including role play, mime-a theme, rangoli and spell bee were organised, a press release here said and added students from about 15 colleges participated.
