More than 80 per cent of food poisoning cases are caused by germs inside the house, especially the ones inside the toilet; visibly clean toilets are not always clean just because it looks clean; salmonella, a type of bacteria found inside the toilet causes typhoid fever and many other infections of intestinal origin.
These are some of the facts and findings made by Hindustan Unilever Limited's brand Domex, a toilet cleaner.
As part of the public awareness drive 'Domex Hygiene Alert', Domex in association with The Indian Medical Association (Mumbai) has taken up the initiative of educating the masses about toilet sanitisation and the diseases that come out of unclean toilets. The research was conducted by Unilver Global Research Centre.
Speaking to reporters here yesterday, Rohit Pathak, senior brand manager of Hindustan UniLever Limited said, 'We are conducting live demonstrations among the public about the microscopic germs in toilet that can cause various diseases. We will cover around one lakh households in Chennai by the end of October and will educate them about the necessity to keep the toilets clean and hygienic'.
Dr Anil Pachnekar, president of Indian Medical Association, Mumbai said, 'Human faeces contain more than 1000 billions of bacteria, hence the toilet should be cleaned and maintained properly'.

and chairman of Bharathiraja Hospital also spoke on the occasion.
