In a swift operation, the Chennai city police today arrested a young couple in connection with the sensational robbery in the house of a former PMK legislator at Kodambakkam here.

At the end of a two-day intense investigation,
the Police found that Saravanan (28), a former driver of the MLA and his
wife Lakshmi (24) were behind the crime. They were arrrested today from
their RK Mutt Road house in Mandaveli and 66 soverigns of stolen gold ornaments
and cash from the house of MLA were recovered.
The day-light robbery on Wednesday of about Rs 1 lakh and 100 soverigns of gold jewellery from the house of Ulagaratchagan, former MLA, sent shock waves among the city residents besides leaving the family stunned. Special police teams were formed after the visit of Police Commissioner Nanchil Kumaran, Joint Commissioner Durairaj and other top officials. Sniffer dogs were brought and finger prints were lifted for analysis. Police officials investigating the case found that Saravanan was employed as a driver with Ulagaratchagan some time back. The young man had quit the services of the former legislator following a tiff with the son of Ulagaratchagan four months ago. Saravanan had reportedly told the officials that he was upset with his previous employer as he was not given his salary dues. Despite repeated attempts Ulagaratchagan did not settle his dues. Saravanan reportedly confessed to the police that only he and his wife had committed the robbery at the house of Ulagaratchagan. |
Speaking to reporters here today he said the Beach was a public place meant for relaxation.'We are not for moral policing. We will take action only against couples who go overboard and indulge in obsene acts,' he clarified.
The Commissioner also said that the police have recovered goods worth Rs 1.77 crore and arrested 72 culprits in 139 cases from city in the past one month.
The recovered goods included 838 sovereign gold jewellery, Rs 6 lakh cash, seven cars, nine two-wheelers, four autorikshaws, 22 cell phones, two DVDs and laptops and 1.50 kg worth silver articles and 670 cement bags.
The video piracy cell have
seized pirated VCDs worth Rs 5 lakh of Tamil movies and arrested three
persons identified as Raja, Mano and Senthil of Royapuram.
