Nuclear energy is set to play a significant role in the country's future as checking of carbondioxide emissions can be done and global warming kept in check, S K Sharma, chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Mumbai, has said.
Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of a workshop Wonder-2007 on 'Nuclear Energy for National Development and Environmental Sustainability', organised by Loyola College on Thursday, Sharma said nuclear energy can be a sustainable means of meeting the country's growing energy needs.
S K Malhotra, head, public awareness division, DAE, Mumbai, in his speech, said the country's 17 nuclear power operating units were generating 4,000 megawatts of electricity. 'With the addition of six more units in five years, this would touch 7,000 megawatts,' he said and added that the DAE was willing to spread awareness on the safe use of atomic energy.
