Tamilnadu Health Minister K K S S R Ramachandran said the State government would take up initiatives to set up a Department of Urogynaecology in all government hospitals. At present, the facility is available only in Government Kasthurba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children (KGHWC) in the city.
Inaugurating the fifth International Conference and Live Workshop on Urogynaecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (URPS 2007) here yesterday, Minister said the research centres on urogynaecology would also be established in all the hospitals.
Stating that the nearly 18 crore women in the country were affected in some kind of urogynaecological problem, he said women, due to stigma, were reluctant to approach and express their urogynaecological problem.
Hailing KGHWC's head of Urogynaecology Department N Rajamaheshwari for steps taken to update the speciality of urogynaecology, Ramachandran asked the medical fraternity to focus on such problems.
Earlier, the Minister unveiled a plaque to launch the 'Doctor Paula Rane Fistula Ward', which is first-of-its-kind in the country, at the hospital.
