Coops: Poll panel for TN likely

Chennai, July 21:

        The Tamilnadu government has decided to seek details on the Election Commission for Cooperatives from other States which have such a mechanism in place to conduct free and fair polls. This was one of the decisions taken after Chief Minister M Karunanidhi chaired a review meeting at the Secretariat yesterday on the progress of planned works in the Departments of Cooperative, Food and Consumer Protection, an official press release said.

        On the entry of Reliance and Corporates in the small trade, the release said the government would take action like Kerala and West Bengal to protect the small traders.

        It was also decided to distribute 10 lakh additional gas connection with free gas stoves to as many families in the State, along with the planned distribution to five lakh families.

        As a benefit to the Cauvery delta farmers, the release said it was decided to speed up issuance of crop loans.

        New family cards in 2 months

        The meeting also decided to set a time-frame of two months for the issuance of new family cards from the date of receiving the application. It was said that family cards for all the verified application would be issued by 15 September.
