managing director M Murali in Chennai yesterday.

Local Administration Minister M K Stalin, while emphasising the role of students in the development of society, urged them to actively participate in the fight against the environmental deterioration and global warming.

Addressing a gathering of more than 5,000 students from various schools at a function organised by the Exnora international to inaugurate ' Cool The Globe Action Begin At Home campaign' here yesterday, he highlighted the need for creating environmental awareness among the children.

This effort should start from home and children should be taken into confidence to make the environment free from pollution and deterioration, he added.

Referring to the recent increase in the use of vehicles which cause pollution, he said the need was awareness and immediate checks to create a pollution-free environment.

Stalin said the government alone cannot solve this issue and people from all walks of life should join hands to curb the problem of global warming. He said government departments were planting saplings and taking other initiatives to solve this problem.

Mayor M Subramanian, presenting various facts of global warming in his address, urged students to counter the problem and plant at least one sapling on their birthday. 'We have 50 lakh students in the State and if each plants a sapling and takes care of it there would be additional 50 lakh trees by next year,' he said.

Earlier, Stalin released a CD and launched an exclusive website for Home Exnora Yoga project.

Founder of Exnora International M B Nirmal, its president Sulochana Ramaseshan and managing director of Shasun Chemical Private Ltd S Abhaykumar also spoke on the occasion.
