Cong men held for bid to block train

NT Bureau
Chennai, July 21:

About 200 Congressmen who tried to block trains in north Chennai were arrested by the police today.

Protestors led by Congress north Chennai District secretary Royapuram Mano held a protest in front of VOC Railway Station condemning the railway administration for going against the promise of rehabilitation it had made to people living along the railway line at New Washermenpet and Tondiarpet.

When Southern Railway planned to lay a third line between Chennai-Central and Gummidipoondi, the residents of Bhojaraj Nagar and Indira Gandhi Nagar opposed it as they said they would be affected.

The State government and Railways announced that the new line would be laid only after rehabilitating those affected by it. And land was identified to construct 9936 houses at Ezhil Nagar at Korukupet for this purpose.

But, the protestors say that the railways was taking steps to lay the new line even before rehabilitating them.
