Chennai, Jan 21:
The constituents of DPA in the State welcomed the Governor's address in the Legislative Assembly yesterday.
Speaking to reporters after Governor's address, PMK Legislative Party leader G K Mani said, 'we welcome the government's decision to urge the Union government to rewrite the Constitution of India afresh. We consider this has a personal victory of our party leader as we have been demanding this for the past few years.'
In the wake of recent Supreme Court verdict on the Ninth Schedule, he said the Constitution should be rewritten to ensure social justice to the underprivileged sections of society.
Mani also welcomed the announcements on interlinking of rivers, setting up of computer laboratories in government higher secondary schools and reconstitution of welfare board for unorganised workers. CPM floor leader C Govindasamy said issuance of house site pattas to poor people, who were residing for more than 10 years in the poromboke land, would be completed within a period of six months from January 2007. He urged the government to evolve ways and means to issue similar pattas to lakhs of poor people living in the temple lands.
While welcoming the decision to continue implementation of wasteland distribution scheme, he said the scheme would not be a success if the government failed to acquire the wasteland in the private parties and thereby distribute them to the poor farm labourers.
Congress Legislative Party
leader D Sudarshanam said the Governor's address contained some welcome
measures for the economic development of the State and uplift of common
people.
