Police must keep abreast of latest developments: CM

        'The Police force should keep itself abreast of technical advancements and use them for crime detection' said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi here yesterday.

        Participating in the valedictory function of the 50th All-India Police duty meet here, he said that the inclusion of anti-sabotage check and bomb detection at the meet was a indicator of the fact that the society was facing increasing threat from desperate elements. In order to tackle law breakers the police fraternity should keep pace with technological progress, he added.

        The Chief Minister said that his government in a bid to equip the police to face the challenges forced on it had sanctioned Rs 68 crore for modernisation, besides appointing a new Police Commission to suggest improvements for the police administration.

        To strengthen the hands of the police, his government had been enacting innovative legislations like the Protection of Interests of Depositors' Act. The economic and social development of a state depended largely on the efficiency of the police in maintaining the peace, he said.

        The primary objective of an efficient police force was the prevention of crime, he said adding that the rate of crime detection, punishment of offenders and protection of life and property was the benchmark for an efficient police.

        Appreciating the Tamilnadu police for winning eight gold, seven silver and three bronze medals in the meet, he announced a cash prize of Rs 50,000 each to gold medal winners, Rs 30,000 to silver medal winners and Rs 20,000 to bronze medalists.

        Besides, a cash prize of Rs 1,000 was announced for all the 1,088 police personnel, who had participated in cultural programmes, conducted during the event.

        The Chief Minister also gave away the Prime Minister's police medals for saving lives to six policemen, two of whom hailed from the Andhra Pradesh police and CRPF and one each from Maharashtra Police and Tamilnadu Police.

        Director-General of Police D Mukherjee said for the successful functioning of the police, periodical upgradation of skills of police personnel was necessary. Inspector-General of Police (Crime) K Thukkaiandi, also spoke.

        Later an array of skills was displayed by the police personnel, amongst which motorcycle rides, 'torch tattoo' by women police personnel and Kalari (an ancient art of Kerala) were greeted with widespread applause.
