Trauma centres on highways

Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu today said that the State Highways Department is planning to install trauma care centres along all national highways for every 50 km stretch to treat accident victims.
Inaugurating an exclusive exhibition on the heart - 'A journey through time' at the newly dedicated 'Solomon Victor Heart Museum' at the Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre here today, the Minister said, 'Over 89,000 people die in road accidents alone every year in the State due to speeding and drunken driving.'
Apart from the government law enforcers, the participation of educational institutions and NGOs is also necessary to curb this increasing road menace, he added.
The Solomon Victor Heart Museum displays rare heart specimens like comparative anatomy of the heart and the hearts of lobsters, prawns, crabs, snails, bony marine fish, birds and mammals from the unique collections of Dr Solomon Victor, the renowned heart surgeon.
Presiding over the function, vice chairman of the State Planning Commission Professor Naganathan urged the doctors to work with a social conscience without thinking only in terms of monetary gains.
Head and proffesor of the
department of dermatology, Government General Hospital, A S Thambiah and
Director of YRG Centre for AIDS research and education, VHS, Dr Suniti
Solomon were also present on the occasion.
