        Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has announced that a total of 4.84 lakh students in the State will receive cycles at a cost of Rs 102 crore in ear 2006-2007 under the free bicycle scheme.

        An official press release said that from among the total number of beneficiaries, those belonging to the backward community numbered 95,062 (male students) and 1,17,199 girl students. In the most backward class and denotified category, the male students numbered 66,006 and female 68,752. In the SC/ST group, there were 1,24,424 student.
