War veteran passes away

NT Bureau
Chennai, Jan 17:

Ninety-three year old World War II veteran, Commander V S P Mudaliar, died at his residence here last night following a massive heart attack, family sources said.

The engineer, who served in the Royal air Force, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, was one of the eldest veterans, who was invited to participate in the 40th and 60th anniversaries of the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union.

His presence there served as a reminder of the role played by Indian soldiers during World War II. He was one of the founders of the Naval Aviation branch at Cochin, called the Naval Aircraft Repair Organisation (NARO) after independence.

One of the veteran's prized posessions was a specially designed wrist watch presented to him by former Soviet President Gorbachev during his visit there.
