Prominent Bharatanatyam exponent Udipi Laxminarayan was conferred the title Natya Kalasarathy at the inaugural function of the 107th year dance festival that began in Chennai yesterday.
The 16- day dance festival of Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha goes on till 6 February and it would feature prominent Bharathnatyam dancers.
Speaking on the occasion, industrialist Nalli Kuppusamy Chettiar said, 'sabhas, trusts and organisations should identify and recognise the talent which is unnoticed in interior parts of Tamilnadu'.
'Professional dancers like Udipi Laxminarayan don't just perform but promote worthwhile musical concepts among the next generation. We should encourage such dancers by conducting dance festivals,' he added.
Udipi Laxminarayan was also member of actor Shivaji Ganesan's drama troupe.
Speaking on the occasion, Laxminarayan urged the youth to consider their profession as a noble one to achieve excellence. He further said that he was looking for an opportunity to render unique service in a traditional way in the field of Bharathnatyam.
Danseuse Padma Subramanian and former director of Doordarshan A Natarajan were also present on the occasion.
Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha
in association with Nalli Chinnasami Chetty and Indian Overseas Bank is
organising the dance festival.
