Chennai, Jan 17:
There is a drop in criminal cases in the districts of Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Vellore and Thiruvannamalai districts during the last year.
However, there was a marginal increase in cases like assault which was largely due to violence during the Assembly and local body elections held in May and October 2006.
Speaking to News Today, Inspector General of Police, North Zone, Radhakrishnan said over 100 assault cases were filed due to the violence in the State during polls.
'The North Zone including Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Vellore and Thiruvannamalai districts, recorded 3712 assault cases in 2006 compared to 3629 cases in 2005,' Radhakrishnan said and added that a marginal increase of 83 cases was due to the ruckus during the elections.
Meanwhile, there was a fall in the registration of property offences, prohibition, dowry death, dowry harassment, murders and road accidents.
Revealing statistics of various cases registered and detected in the north zone, the Inspector General said 41,661 cases were filed for possession of illicit liquor. About 38,556 persons were arrested and 233 of them were booked under the Goondas act.
'We registered 41 dowry death cases last year. It was less than that of the previous year's record of 60 cases'. As regards offences like bureau pulling, 2507 cases were registered in 2006 as against 2952 cases in 2005. Murder cases were 285, out of which 271 were detected and charge sheeted. However,14 cases remain clueless.
By conducting routine drive against rowdies in the district, the police were able to nab about 1313 notorious rowdies and 83 of them were detained under Goondas act.
The north zone recorded 13,277 accidents of which 2619 were fatal in 2006. And 1,22,460 traffic violators were booked which includes 5293 drunken drivers. For the first time, the licenses of 210 offenders have been suspended, he said.
The North zone is also gearing
up for implementing innovative ideas like community policing to bring down
criminal activities in all these districts, Radhakrishnan said.
