Man fights with wife, ends life in mid-sea

NT Bureau
Chennai, Jan 17:

The sea spoilt their togetherness. A 30-year-old man on a voyage from Andaman to Chennai along with his wife and children committed suicide in mid-sea by jumping off the ship after he got into a quarrel with his wife.

According to the captain of the vessel, Bheemaiah (30) of Pamur village near Nellore in Andhra, his wife Chandra (26), their three-year-old daughter and an one-year-old son were coming to Chennai on his ship. The couple was working in a milk farm and was with their family in Andaman.

They wished to return to their motherland on 12 January and booked tickets and commenced their voyage to Chennai aboard MV Nicobar. The couple was arguing from day one since they boarded the vessel. It reached a flashpoint on 14 January when Bheemaiah destroyed the family photos he had with him and then threw himself into the sea.

Two priests who happened to see him jumping reported to the captain. The captain immediately anchored the ship and launched a search operation. It went on for about three hours and Bheemaiah could not be found. Then the ship resumed its voyage.

When the ship reached Chennai harbour the captain complained to the police. Deputy Commissioner of Police Choodeswaran and Assistant Commissioner Nagaraj enquired. It was learnt that Bheemaiah's wife did not have an inkling of the incident. She learnt of her husband's death from other co-passengers. She seemed to be unconcerned. After police enquiry she left for her native place along with her children.

Police sources said the hands of the police were tied as the incident took place at mid-sea.
