MADURAI TURNS BULLISH: Can the three-day festival of Pongal, the harvest festival, be complete without the rough and tumble of jallikattu,
the bull-taming event, which is held annually
in places down South? Absolutely no, would be the answer coming from many lips. Pongal may have
come and gone, but for the exuberant men, mostly comprising fiery youth, not a year passes without the memory of maiming of limbs and loss of life,
for that matter, while trying to subdue the bull in
distant Palamedu near Madurai. What grabbed
attention  this year was the mandatory breathalyser
test for man and beast; however, the thrills and
spills were not lacking. Lensman R Giri captured the
action in his frame when he was in Palamedu
to witness the bull-taming event.

PROFUSION OF POPULATION: It was fun and frolic at the usual tourist spots in the city with Kaanum
Pongal crowds. The Marina was, to use the inevitable (and irritating) cliche, a sea of humanity.
The zoo, the theme parks, the theatres all
were packed with population, so to say. Our

cameramen A R Jayakumar and R Thiagarajan
bring glimpses from two such spots.
