'Education system has long way to go'

        The public education system in India has to be improved a lot and funded more to compete with private institutions, both national and international, professor Gary Vanloon of Queens University, Canada, has said.

        He said this while discussing and exploring the possibilities of collaboration in the areas of health, environment, agriculture and water management, with the Deans and directors at the University of Madras on Monday.

        Professor Vanloon is also the president-elect of the India Membership Council, formed under the bi-national Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute in year 2005 in New Delhi to explore the possibilities cooperation in the field of education between the two countries. The University of Madras is a member of the council since its inception.

        Speaking on the occasion, C T Indra, director of Centre for Canadian Studies at the University of Madras, said Canada and Indian had recently signed an agreement for promotion of science and technology. Making use of the opportunity, the university has deputed a faculty for important workshops, to be organised by the Membership Council on biotechnology and health sciences.

        Registrar in-charge of the university M Ranganatham welcomed president-elect professor Vanloon, and C T Indra briefed about the Indian Membership council and other activities of the association of the University with the Canadian universities at the meet. It was attended by D Velmurugan, Dean (Research), Thangaraj, director of planning and development at the University of Madras and Prasad, director of Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Peace and Conflicts.
