Sir,
This is with reference to the call by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to celebrate Pongal as a 'Tamilian Festival' (Thamizhar Thirunal) in a grand manner, unitedly without any caste or religious differences. He has also advised people to decorate their homes, offices and business establishments with serial lights. For the last 40 years, the Dravidian leaders have been repeatedly trying to give a Dravidian colour to 'Makara Sankranthi', which is a 100 per cent Hindu festival celebrated with great fanfare by Hindus worldwide.
The first day being 'Bhogi' signifies the destroying of 'old' things and thoughts and welcoming of 'new' things and thoughts. The second day being 'Makara Shankranthi' signifies the prayer to Lord Suryanarauana invoking His blessings for a bright and brilliant future after thanking Him for his blessings of the past by offering 'Sweet Pongal.' The third day being 'Maattu Pongal' signifies our reverence to the 'Go Matha' or 'Kamadhenu' and this day is also famous for the 'Bull fight.'
Also, Pongal or Shankranthi is not celebrated by people belonging to other religions, unlike the 'Onam' in Kerala. Therefore, let Dravidian leaders stop repeating their failed attempts to de-Hinduise the Pongal festival and to separate the Tamils from the Hindu fold.
