Banking on MGR's look

Syed Dasdagir works in Bank of India, and after work he acts. He is in TV Varadharajan's troupe of United Visuals. But for Varadharajan who gave him roles - comedy - in his dramas, he says he would not have become so well known.

He was told to disguise himself as M G Ramachandran, whose fan he was from boyhood days. That fitted him 100 per cent and sure enough people do mistake him for MGR. Only at bank functions does he dress up like that filmstar.

Many a time he had received a standing ovation. He says he himself selects the make-up. Often ministers and bank executives would refuse to be seated, so MGR-like was Dasdagir in his garb.

He had acted in over ten dramas that were staged for about 800 times.

As nostalgic reminiscence, he narrates an incident involving the critic Subbudu. In one drama 'Ilavasa Inaippu', he took the role of chitthal (building labourer) wearing just a half pant and a banian. After the drama when hundreds were there, Subbudu pinpointed him and asked for the boy. He appreciated in front of all. His mentor, Varadharajan said at that time, 'It is Vasishtar vayal brahmarishi pattam.'

He has acted in three TV serials and a guest role in Madhavan-starred film 'Alapayuthae.' 'Kaialavu Manasu,' 'Nimmadhi Ungal Choice' (SP Muthuraman) and 'Vidiyal Pudhidhu' (K Balachander Production) are some of Dasdagir's  T V stints.

He is known as MGR in his bank. Once he recollects, he was shown that much reverence, when he was sent in an AC car to get into MGR's fittings so that he shouldn't sweat.

A committed artiste with involvement says 'the bank has been helpful to me to a great extent in my coming to the fore.'

Syed Dasdagir lives at Sri Krishna Apartments, 106, College Road, Nanganallur. Phone No 2231 5467; 93827 89626.
