Two major problems, not that they're uncommon, have been plaguing residents, motorists and those passing through Kellys Road for quite sometime now - neglected manholes and weather-beaten roads.
One has to be very cautious while treading the pedestrian pathway on Kellys Road at Purasawalkam as the newly built manholes have remained uncovered for long.
Two such manholes and pathways dug out in patches for clearing the obstruction of sewage had been left in bad shape posing a great risk to passersby.
Pointing an accusing finger at the civic officials, Ravindran, a local resident, said the manholes had been left uncovered for the past one month.
'The stench emanating from sewage water flowing underneath is unbearable', he said adding that everything have to be set right before any untoward incident takes place.
An auto- driver said the sewer construction work had been going on at a a snail's pace for the past six months and even the construction materials were laid on the main road without being cleared.
Sources from a private hospital in front of which there exists a four- foot deep opening of the sewage canal said this unfinished job had resulted in rapid increase of mosquitoes and it is feared that it would also lead to spreading of vector- borne diseases in the nearby residential areas.
Apart from this, the damaged condition of Kellys Road had irked commuters. Motorists passing through this battered roads experience a bumpy ride, straining every muscle in their body.
'Moreover, this road becomes unmotorable during rainy season due to stagnation of water,' said Mohan, a motorist.
President of Kilpauk Welfare Association Prakash Lulla, speaking to News Today, said Kellys Road links Purasawalkam with Poonamallee High Road and a large number of commuters use this road to reach either of the destinations. He expressed grief saying commuters passing through face untold misery due to the open manholes and bad roads.
He said the officials concerned
should look into this matter and take measures to at least minimise the
hardship faced by motorists and pedestrians.
