especially poultry waste, dumped and burnt near the government high school, Chitlapakkam, has become a health hazard to the residents. |
Dumping of poultry garbage and other waste in the land, which is a part of the Chitlapakkam lake, near the government high school, continues to be a cause of concern for the students as well as the local residents.
The stench that emanates from the poultry waste is nauseating and residents expect steps from the local authorities to put an end to this menace.
'If this continues, the land will turn a pucca waste dumpyard. Action should be taken before that', says a resident.
Hotels and chicken stalls near the lake carry the waste in pushcarts and dump here without thinking about the damage they do to the local eco system.
Due to pressure from the public, the town panchayat constructed a compound wall some time back. But residents allege that it is of no use. Still the waste are dumped there.
Devadoss, a resident of Chitlapakkam, said, 'even a hotel run by the self help group near the lake is not different. They also dump their waste in the same place.'
When contacted Chitlapakkam
Town Panchayat president Mohan said, 'Panchayat has directed all hotels
and chicken stalls not to dump waste there.' He assured that the panchayat
will take strong measures to prevent it.
