during a seminar organised by Exnora International in Chennai yesterday.

State Minister for Social Welfare Poongothai Aladi Aruna has said necessary initiatives have to be taken up for solid waste management in view of the increasing population in Chennai.

Inaugurating a one-day seminar on 'Global warming and the importance of waste management ' organised by Exnora International here yesterday, the Minister said the situation would be worse in future as the population in the city was now approximately 285 million, and this would increase further.

She said that in the next 20 years, the population was estimated to be around 400 million in the city and with increase in the lower and middle class groups, it was likely that more consumption would lead to more waste.

The Minister said that now around 40,000 metric tonnes of solid organic waste were produced and in the next five years it was going to increase by 1,45,000 metric tones.

Indicating that over-utilisation of chemicals had made soil infertile resulting in failure of crop in due course of time, she said that the 40,000 metric tonnes of solid waste produced in city can be utilised as an organic fertiliser to increase the productivity of soil.

Earlier, she said that indigenous methods were required for management of solid waste as 'the waste produced in developed nations was dry when compared to the ones produced here.'

Director of Shasun Chemicals S Abhaya Kumar administered the environmental protection pledge of Exnora International.

Later, the Minister released a CD titled 'Cooling the Globe'.

Sultan Ahmed Ismail, Head of Biotechnology, New College, M B Nirmal, founder, Exnora International, Sulochana Rameseshan, president, Exnora International, and S Sivakumaran, chairman, Exnora International, also spoke.
